Biotin & Finasteride Plan

The science
behind our treatments

Hundreds of studies have been made on hair loss treatments, but the only two treatments that have been clinically proven are Oral Tablets and Minoxidil.

Sons is the Irish Licence holder for both.

1. Combined Treatment with oral tablet and topical minoxidil in male androgenetic alopecia: a randomised and comparative study – National Library of Medicine (2015)

2. Use of Oral Tablet in the treatment of men with Androgenetic Alopecia – Journal of the Academy of Dermatology (1998)

3. A one-year observational study with minoxidil 5% solution - Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology(2004)

FAQs

Is Finasteride prescription-only?

Yes, Finasteride is a prescription-only medication in Ireland. This means you’ll need to complete a quick online consultation with one of our medical professionals before you can start treatment. This ensures Finasteride is safe and suitable for you based on your medical history.

Who can take Finasteride?

Finasteride is suitable for adult men over 18 experiencing male pattern baldness. It’s not suitable for women or children. During your consultation, our medical team will review your health history to ensure it’s the right treatment for you. Those with liver problems or a history of prostate cancer should discuss their options with a doctor first.

What happens if I stop taking Finasteride?

If you stop taking Finasteride, the protective effects will gradually wear off. DHT levels will return to normal within a few weeks, and hair loss will typically resume at the rate it would have without treatment. Any hair you’ve regrown may be lost over the following 6-12 months. For lasting results, continued use is recommended.

Can I take Finasteride with other hair loss treatments?

Yes, Finasteride can be safely combined with other hair loss treatments like Minoxidil. In fact, many men see better results when using both together - Finasteride works internally to block DHT, while Minoxidil stimulates hair growth externally. Our treatment plans are designed to give you the best chance of success.

What is the recommended Finasteride dosage?

The standard dose for treating male pattern hair loss is 1mg taken once daily. It’s important to take the same dose each day and not to take more than prescribed, as higher doses won’t improve results and may increase the risk of side effects. Consistency with your daily 1mg tablet is what delivers results.

Is Finasteride safe to use long-term?

Yes, Finasteride has been used for hair loss treatment for over 25 years and has a well-established safety profile. Clinical studies have followed men taking Finasteride for up to 10 years with no increase in side effects over time. As with any medication, regular check-ins with your prescriber are recommended.

At what age should I start taking Finasteride?

Finasteride is approved for men aged 18 and over. Many experts suggest that starting treatment early - at the first signs of hair thinning - gives you the best chance of maintaining your hair. The earlier you act, the more hair you have to protect. There’s no upper age limit, though results may vary.

Does Finasteride work on a receding hairline?

Finasteride can help slow or stop a receding hairline, though it tends to be most effective on the crown and mid-scalp areas. Results vary from person to person - some men see improvement at the hairline, while others primarily notice reduced thinning elsewhere. For receding hairlines, combining Finasteride with Minoxidil often yields better results.

Can Finasteride thicken existing hair?

Yes, in addition to preventing further hair loss, Finasteride can help improve the thickness and quality of existing hair. By blocking DHT, the medication allows miniaturised (thinning) hairs to recover and grow back thicker and stronger over time. Many men notice their hair looks fuller and healthier after several months of treatment.

What’s the difference between Finasteride and Minoxidil?

Finasteride and Minoxidil work in different ways. Finasteride is an oral tablet that blocks DHT - the hormone responsible for male pattern baldness - from within. Minoxidil is a topical treatment applied directly to the scalp that increases blood flow to hair follicles. Many men use both together for the best results, as they complement each other’s effects.

Why hair loss
happens

Androgenic alopecia (often referred to as male pattern hair loss) is a condition that impacts men with a genetic sensitivity to the hormone DHT. Over time, DHT damages hair follicles, disrupting the hair growth cycle and eventually leading to hair loss.
