Why Am I Losing So Much Hair? Understanding Common Causes

If you’ve begun to notice that your hair is falling out at a faster rate than usual, you may be wondering what could be behind the change.

The reasons you might be losing your hair can vary, so we’re here to tell you what could be going on by outlining some common causes.

Why am I losing so much hair?

The most common reason so many men up and down the country lose their hair is because of a genetic predisposition to hair loss. Some men are genetically more sensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a by-product of testosterone. DHT binds to hair follicles and causes a process called ‘miniaturisation’, which causes the hair follicle to shrink and eventually stop producing hair completely. Finasteride is a DHT-blocker, meaning it blocks the conversion of testosterone into DHT, helping to protect your scalp against miniaturisation.

Minoxidil is another popular hair loss treatment, which uses a different pathway to fight hair loss. It is thought to boost blood flow to the scalp when applied topically, thereby revitalising your strands by supplying a greater level of oxygen and blood flow to the blood vessels there, thus providing a better environment for hair growth.

Is hair loss always genetic?

Losing 50-100 strands of hair a day is normal and not a cause for concern. However, if you’ve checked your pillow in the morning or your shower floor and noticed that more hairs are there than normal, you might want to investigate.

Although it’s likely your hair loss could be down to genetics, there are other reasons it could be happening too.

One of these reasons is stress. There is evidence to suggest that hair loss and stress are related. If stress is not well managed, your immune system could suffer, having a knock-on effect on your hair.

A vitamin deficiency, like lacking Biotin, zinc, or iron, for instance, is another reason your hair might be lost. The requisite amount of vitamins and nutrients in your diet is crucial to maintaining healthy hair. Adding a Biotin supplement to your daily routine or using a DHT-Blocking Shampoo that contains iron and argan oil could go a long way to keeping your hair strong before it starts falling out.
